Project 53: Be an Engine of Change - Tanzania
Transportation is key to the success of Standing Voice’s outreach programs throughout Tanzania. Up until now, the NGO has relied on unreliable public transport or private taxis which is costly. We are raising funds to purchase a vehicle, as acquiring mobility will strengthen the flexibility and efficiency of their Albinism care program delivery, and save them $20,000 per year on vehicle hire which is critical for grassroots organizations like Standing Voice.
Standing Voice, is an international NGO defending the rights of people with albinism in Tanzania and Malawi. They support thousands of people with albinism at local, national and international levels through programmes in Skin Cancer Prevention, Vision Care, Education, Advocacy, and Community.
Albinism is a genetic condition that reduces melanin pigment in the skin, eyes and hair. People with albinism are pale, visually impaired, and vulnerable to skin cancer. Albinism has an unusually high prevalence in Africa, where it remains poorly understood and shrouded in myth and discrimination.
Many people with the condition are shut out of civil participation and unable to access basic opportunities and services, including healthcare, education, housing, employment and political representation. The body parts of people with albinism are believed to generate wealth and fortune when used in witchcraft and often people are hunted for their limbs and even murdered.
Standing Voice requires a large safari-type vehicle in order to transport their teams and carry specialist medical equipment that is used to deliver clinics. It is also important that the vehicle is able to navigate difficult terrain, given the variable road quality in Tanzania and the location of some of their beneficiaries in remote and inaccessible areas.
This is the second time we are supporting Standing Voice as we are endlessly impressed by their professionalism and quality of work with marginalized albinism populations. We are raising $37,000 to purchase the right vehicle for their needs. Join us in becoming an engine of change and touching more lives across Tanzania.
