Project 23: Build a Bathroom - Ghana
Partnering with the Sub-Saharan Education Project (SEEP), we improved the daily lives of 180 students and teachers at the Bentum Dreambuilders School, with toilet facilities for all to use with dignity and privacy. Menstruating girls no longer have to miss school as now they have a bathroom.
Something as basic as toilets are not always available at schools in remote and impoverished areas around the world. A staggering fact is that 36% of Ghana's primary public schools don't have functioning toilets. The hardship created by a lack of adequate restroom facilities can be significant and tend to be experienced to a higher degree by girls. Imagine not being able to go to school during your menstrual cycle. Your absence would affect your academic performance and development as a student. Some girls will drop out of school entirely.
Build a Bathroom is an opportunity to help young boys and girls with necessary bathroom facilities at their school. In 2019, SSEP completed constructing their Dreambuilders School in the village of Bentum. This organization cultivates partnerships with marginalized communities in the country, invest in local resources, and provide education to women and children living in extreme poverty.
However, the school still needed a bathroom for the the students and staff to access. Thats where we come in! We are going to build a brand new restroom structure suited with all the necessary amenities to support good hygiene and outstanding academic achievement thanks to our partnership with SEEP.
180 students + 10 teachers at the school will have proper facilities with both urinals and stalls to so that life for students, teachers, and administrative staff will be more comfortable and convenient.
